Marrakech to Merzouga Road Trip: The Ultimate 3-Day Desert Route

The road from Marrakech to Merzouga is one of the great road trips of the world. Crossing the High Atlas Mountains, winding through kasbahs, dropping into lunar gorges, and finally arriving at golden dunes that stretch to the Algerian border โ€” this route through southern Morocco is why people fall in love with this country and never quite recover.

We've done this drive hundreds of times. Here's the definitive guide to doing it right.

The Route Overview

Total distance: ~560 km each way | Duration: 3 days / 2 nights | Difficulty: Easy (private vehicle with driver)

The standard route goes: Marrakech โ†’ Tizi n'Tichka pass โ†’ Ait Ben Haddou โ†’ Ouarzazate โ†’ Dades Gorge โ†’ Todra Gorge โ†’ Merzouga (Erg Chebbi). The return can loop back via a different route or retrace the same road โ€” both are spectacular.

Day 1: Marrakech to Dades Gorge (290 km)

Stop 1: Tizi n'Tichka Mountain Pass (2,260m)

Leave Marrakech early morning. The drive south through the High Atlas takes 2 hours to reach Tizi n'Tichka, Morocco's highest road pass at 2,260m. Stop for photos โ€” the panoramas of the Atlas range are extraordinary, with Berber villages clinging to the slopes.

Stop 2: Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO World Heritage)

The ancient fortified ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is one of Morocco's most iconic sights โ€” a collection of earthen clay buildings that appear to grow directly from the desert rock. It's appeared in dozens of films including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Allow 2 hours to walk through the old ksar and climb to the granary at the top for views over the Ounila Valley.

Stop 3: Ouarzazate โ€” "Gateway to the Sahara"

Lunch in Ouarzazate, the film capital of Morocco. Visit the Atlas Studios if you're interested, or simply pass through and continue east. The Taourirt Kasbah in the centre of town is worth a 45-minute stop.

Overnight: Dades Gorge

Drive to the Dades Gorge for the first night. The gorge is dramatic at sunset โ€” rose-red rock walls turning amber, with the narrow road winding up between them. Stay in one of the gorge guesthouses carved into the rock face.

๐Ÿ’ก Local Tip: The stretch of Dades Gorge road known as "Monkey Fingers" โ€” bizarre eroded rock formations that look exactly like their name โ€” is a 15-minute drive up from the main gorge. Don't miss it.

Day 2: Dades Gorge to Merzouga (170 km)

Stop 1: Todra Gorge

The Todra Gorge is a short detour en route โ€” a slot canyon where sheer walls rise 300m on either side of a river just a few metres wide. Walk through the narrowest section in the morning when the light hits the canyon floor. The contrast between the towering rock and the bright turquoise river is surreal.

Arrival: Merzouga & Erg Chebbi

Arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon. The village sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi โ€” the largest sand dunes in Morocco, rising to 150m. Check in to your desert camp, then mount camels for the sunset trek into the dunes. The 45-minute camel ride to the camp is the best approach โ€” the dunes reveal themselves gradually as the light turns golden.

Desert Camp Night

Dinner around a campfire with live Gnawa music, then a walk further into the dunes for stargazing. The Milky Way is clearly visible from Erg Chebbi on moonless nights.

Day 3: Sunrise in the Dunes โ€” Return to Marrakech

Wake before dawn for the sunrise camel trek back. The dunes in early morning light are a completely different experience from sunset โ€” cooler, quieter, with footprint-free sand. Return to Marrakech via a slightly different route, passing the Draa Valley with its 25km of palm trees.
